The Golan Heights is a mountain plateau of volcanic origin, extending eastward from the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) and the Hula Valley, and further inland into Syria. Most of it is more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

After the 1967 war, a large number of minefields remain in the area of the former border, which are fenced off but not neutralized. As a result, much of the area has remained natural, and there are places where no man has actually set foot on the ground for about 50 years.
