Gorny monastery is an Orthodox nunnery, which is home to about 60 sisters.
This Russian Orthodox convent was established in 1871 and was nicknamed Gorny or Moskovia by the locals. The beautiful golden onion domes dominate the Ein Kerem landscape and immediately caught my eye. The monastery is located on a hilltop above the Church of the Visitation and is visible from the surrounding valley.
The site was purchased from the dragoon of the French consulate in Jerusalem for 55,000 francs. A women's community was organized on the purchased plot, which three years later received its charter and was approved as a nunnery.
